SALTZY SELFIES - AROUND 100 IMAGE-MAKERS

CURATOR'S NOTES. Probing the possibility that the selfie may be an undiscovered art form (or at least taking note of various categories of selfie he had run across), Jerry Saltz, the World's Most Famous Living Art Critic, penned an article called "Art at Arm’s Length: A History of the Selfie" [ www ]. Jerry posted a link to the article on his own Facebook page, a page which is an epic forum for Art World types with over 40,000 followers --set to "public" privacy status and with a "take anything from me" attitude toward copyright. Jerry said, "Feel free to post Selfies that you think fit in one or another of these categories" and almost 300 replies quickly followed --some with photos [ www ]. There were a few "we need a curator" calls posted, including sentiment from Jerry. Since other curators (many read Jerry's posts) didn't all raise their hands at once, I took the plunge. Behold an online exhibit of around 100 submitted selfies. Many are from artists or art-exhibit-visitors, leading to some unusual imagery. More text. Only "Fair Use" sized low-rez screencap icons appear in the grids herer. This exhibit is non-commercial/non-selling, and any parties wishing to acquire an image must consult the original image-makers (see link in photo captions). Thanks to everyone for sharing some of your SELVES. --Terry Ward (AKA GrumpyVisualArtist) [ web ]

The (Wave 1) images are re-grouped alphabetically by the creators' first names (with apologies to poor Vincent Zambrano, who can't win no matter how alphabetical order is deployed). The re-groupings created, by chance, new relationships which fascinate me. The accidental convergence of common elements by different photographers intrigues me. Eyewear, tilted heads, whole-body figures, sphere-themes, masks, medical themes, seductiveness, whimsy --tended to cluster together even though only the chance elements of artist names (and where in the next group of eight specimens one's photo would appear) determined the "relationships" among these people. It reminds me of my own long-ago delight at seeing page-headers in the Yellow Pages where coincidental grouping created funny (to me) phrases like DEMOLITION-DENTISTRY or PICKLING-PLUMBERS. Perhaps the current Facebook users' first "social media" resource was the phone book --of course, long before the phrase social media existed.

The Wave 2 images either came in after I made the initial exhibit page or were unable to be included in Wave 1 (due to: not really a selfie, use of a proxy-model, too small, or I just missed it).

Big thanks to PE Sharpe and Joaquin Carter for the inspiration to assemble this collection. Thanks again to Jerry who got this whole thing started with the selfie article [ www ].
